Nashville’s official ice hockey team, the Nashville Predators are nicknamed “Preds” and was named after an extinct species, a saber-toothed cat’s fossil skull, found in the downtown area of Nashville in May of 1971 during the excavation of what is today’s twenty-eight-storey First American Center.

On the 25th of June 1997, the Nashville Predators joined the National Hockey League, when the league publicized that four cities, including Nashville, were awarded expansion franchises. The city of Nashville got quite a rewarding deal with paying only 31.25% of the usual eighty-million-fee for joining.

The Nashville Predators first played on the 10th of October

in 1998, where they were defeated 1-0 by the Florida Panthers. On the 13th of October, three nights after their defeat, in a game with Carolina Hurricanes, they won their very first win with a 3-2 score. In the National Hockey League (NHL) season of 2003-04, the team made their very first trip to the Western Conference playoffs, where they lost the quarterfinals to their contender Detroit Red Wings, beating them in six games.

In 2005-06, the team set a National Hockey League record by winning the first four games through one goal each; they also became the 4th NHL franchise to begin that season with an 8-0. In the same season, Nashville Predators set a franchise mark with wins having a 2-0 “shutout” in a game with Phoenix Coyotes played on the

During that game with the Phoenix Coyotes, Chris Mason, the team’s goalie, became the ninth goalie to score a goal. At the season’s end, the Nashville Predators had accrued 106 points -the team’s first ever 100-point season-, as well as wrapping up “ice advantage” during the initial round of the playoffs which was the first time in the team’s history. They ended the season having an NHL-best 32-8-1 record at home.

The team’s head coach is Barry Trotz, who previously coached Portland Pirates of the AHL to the 1994-95 season of the Calder Cup; in the same year, Trotz was

awarded “AHL Coach of the Year”.

Nashville Predators fans have made their own exceptional tradition in showing the team their support; on occasions, an aficionado will toss a catfish on the ice. The first occurrence of this “tradition” was seen on October 30, 2003; on November 13, 2003, about four catfish were tossed on the ice after Nashville Predators goaled. This city’s official team is also among the notable and well-known prides of Nashville that visitors come to see.
