The Nashville Public Library is among the many historic landmarks that can be seen in Nashville today. The history of Nashville’s library dates back to 1813, but it was not until late 1800’s that Nashville had its public library. In 1897, a Library law was passed by the Tennessee General Assembly, authorizing cities of twenty-thousand or more residents, to institute and uphold free reading rooms and public libraries.
Prior to that time, governments of cities had no authority to utilize tax money for supporting libraries. The first public library of Nashville was established in 1898 called the Howard Library; with Nashville city acting under the Library Law provisions, it allocated $2500 for Howard Library.
By the year 1899, the library was providing books, but borrowing

books were not free like how it is today; the library’s patrons had to buy a two-dollar “reader’s card”. In 1901, Nashville increased its allotment to $5000 for Howard Library. At that point, the fee for the reader’s card was abolished, making it the first “free circulating” Nashville library.
The Nashville Public Library “grew out” of this past. In 1901, a $100,000 donation was offered to Nashville by Andrew Carnegie for constructing a new library on the condition that the city would allocate $10,000 yearly for its preservation. The city of Nashville accepted this term and the contract for “Carnegie Library of Nashville” was granted. On the 19th of September 1904, the “Carnegie Library” building was opened to public at “225 Polk Ave.”.
Among the many highlights in the changes that the Nashville Public Library underwent since the time it was opened as the “Carnegie Library” in 1904 include:
In 1927, the library took the services of its “first librarian”, Mary H. Johnson, who had formal training. The “Carnegie Library” name was changed to Nashville Public

Library in 1934. A new “branch building” was built at Hadley Park’s entrance and was called the “Hadley Park” branch.
In 1959, the Nashville Public Library was officially turned over to Nashville city, and on the 16th of September 1961, a building for the new “Main Library” and five other new branches was approved by the City Council. And on the 9th of June 2001, the “New Nashville Public Library” was opened.
Today, the Nashville Public Library, from its beginnings way back in the late 1800’s has seen various great changes and improvements, and has remarkably served the public with its huge, complete array of books. As what the Nashville Public Library proudly says “a city with a great library is a great city”.
