Broadcasted on USA Network throughout the US, the Nashville Star reality TV program premiered on the 8th of March 2003. The show finished its 5th production season, making it a “longest-running” competition series in cable TV.
The Nashville Star is comparable to American Idol, where performers sing to make an impact to both the public and the celebrity judges. The public can vote on their favorite star through calling-in and/or through internet votes. However, unlike the American Idol TV show, Nashville Star performances are restricted to “country music”.
The show is produced by “Reveille Productions” and is shown live every Thursday nights from “Bellsouth Acuff Theatre”. However, the show’s premier episodes every season are taped. The audience members need to have tickets, distributed with no charge except for “standard handling fee”. Historically, Nashville Star competition took place during March and April, but has been moved to the months of January and February for its 2007 season.
With a format almost identical to American Idol’s final round, Nashville Star finalists sing one song every week. They do this individually and they face praise and/or criticism from a group of three judges. In the last part of the show, the viewing public is allowed to vote through toll-free numbers or the

official website of the show. The performer who gets the smallest vote number is eliminated.
Since Nashville Star only airs once a week, the announcement for eliminations are done during the following week’s show. The “finalists” who are not eliminated, are randomly called to the stage to perform once again until only two finalists remain. Then, one finalist is called sing, while the other is removed for getting the smallest number of votes during the preceding week.
The finalists are not aware of the arrangement in which they perform, and only have about less than a minute to be ready when their name is called. During the season finale, no votes are counted.

At the moment, judges are simply present to give criticism in an effort to “sway” the voting viewers. Nashville Star judges however, don’t participate during preliminary auditions -the task is left to the producer of the show.
The show’s regular episodes run sixty-minutes, but have an occasionally longer runtime during “premieres” and “finales”. Its first 3 seasons all showed nine episodes; however at the start of 2006, it was cut to eight episodes.
Nashville Star is a much awaited and much followed TV series. Despite criticisms of its being an “American Idol rip-off”, the show has continued to be successful and has had hit ratings for USA Network with a planned 6th season production early 2008.
